Solution to iOS9 "Slide to Upgrade" issue on iPad/iPhone
Please Note Apple's Official Fix now Available
Method 1 (Apple's solution)
If you don't have a backup I suggest you go to Method 2 but you will need steps 1 & 2 from below.
Method 2 (Downgrade to 8.4.1 Upgrade to 9.0.2)
Once done, backup your device before if you do anything else, then upgrade to iOS 9.0, if you have the heart for it!
The bug seems to affect devices upgrading from iOS7 to iOS9.

Apple has pushed out an iOS update to address issues users have experienced with the Setup Assistant app getting stuck on “Slide to Upgrade.” Please read Apple releases iOS 9.0.1 to fix Slide to Upgrade and other bugsThe following is left as an example of what persons had to do before to get the iPad/iPhone/iPod working. It is preferable to use the official Apple Fix above going forward. If it fails, try Method 2 below; it works.
Method 1 (Apple's solution)
If you don't have a backup I suggest you go to Method 2 but you will need steps 1 & 2 from below.
- Connect your iOS device to a computer (that you've previously synced) with iTunes. Then make sure iTunes is open. (n.b. Ensure you have the latest version of iTunes)
- Select your device. If you don't see it listed, force restart your device by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
- You will need to enter you passcode 1/2 times
- and "trust the computer" (if you have not already used the device with that machine)
- If you made an iTunes backup of your device before updating to iOS 9, restore your device from that backup.
- If not, Apple suggest you need to make a backup of your device in iTunes, then restore from that backup. (This might not work. For many it says, 'backing up your device', but does nothing, so move to Method 2)
Method 2 (
- Download iOS
8.4.1iOS - Select your device (look up model number - model wiki )
(Double check & ensure you pick the correct one - iPhone | iPad ) - Then iOS
8.4.1iOS - Download it (It is a large file, so be patient. It takes time. Note the location )
(n.b. Certain browsers may change the ipsw-file into a zip-file. If this occurs, re-name the to end in .ipsw and iTunes will recognize it) - While that downloads, do steps 1 & 2 from Method 1 above. (repeated below for you as 3 & 4)
- Open iTunes (preferably on a computer previously synced with your device)
- Make sure iTunes is open first before connecting. n.b. - Ensure you have the latest version of iTunes! i.e. iTunes 12.3 at writing. To do this by clicking on the menu item 'help' in iTunes and then 'check for updates'. If you have to upgrade iTunes, please restart the PC/Mac after the updating.
- Then Connect your iOS device to the computer
- Do some diagnostics. Click on 'Help' then
- Select your device. If you don't see it listed, force restart your device by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
- You will need to enter you passcode 1/2 times
- and "trust the computer" (if you have not already used the device with that machine)
- When the download is complete,
- Hold the Option / Alt Key on your Mac keyboard, OR Shift Key in Windows and
- While holding the key, click on the "Check for Update or Update" button in iTunes,
- A file explorer window should now open. (n.b. Some guides suggest the restore iPhone/iPad option but that asks for you to disable "find my iPhone" plus if you don't have a backup it is useless and you lose your data. Don't use it). See video below from Lewis Tech for e.g. Use the latest signed As indicated Do Not Click The Restore Option you will lose your data
- Browse to the file you downloaded , in step 1 above, select the file and click open
- Watch the messages from extracting, to verify, to preparing until your phone comes back to life. (Please be patient as this can take up to 30 minutes)
That is it and there seems to be no loss of data which is good news.
Once done, backup your device before if you do anything else,

this actually worked unlike apple's solution
this actually worked unlike apple's solution
Thank you!
I tried the apple solution and it did not work. (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205239)
I just got stuck in an endless loop and lost the entire evening:
7 pm: backed up phone
7:30 pm: foolishly pushed the 'upgrade' button
8:00 pm: phone is a brick
1:00 am: downgrade to ios8 done and restore worked - whew
@laurie Check to ensure that you picked the right device. if you pick the wrong device it will say incompatible. If you had jail-breaked the phone you are might have problems too
Now don't know what to do!
2. Ensure the file manager window came up. Check step #5
I don't understand what you are option/alt clicking on for "check for update" is it for the device?
I can't get itunes to recognize my device at all. It's treating it like it's brand new.
Thank you so much.
I can't even get iTunes to recognize my iPad
@dot The key thing is to update regularly and BACK UP your phone
To get out of recovery mode,
- make sure your USB cable is connected to both the laptop running iTunes and your device.
- You may need to hold the home button while connecting your USB cable.
- Now hold the home and sleep/wake buttons together until you see the Apple logo appear
Until Itunes recoginises your device the click to update wont work, If it does not, this solution cannot help
1. HOLD the Option / Alt Key on your Mac keyboard, OR left Shift Key in Windows
2. While Holding, click on the the "Check for update"
The file explore window will now open

or look at this link with a similar solution
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/how-downgrade-ios-9-ios-8-4-1-1520232
1. Put phone in recovery mode
2. turned off "find my phone" (got the email confirming it is off)
3. Downloaded the correct ipsw file (ios version 8.4)
4. Option clicked the restore button in itunes.
5. Opened the ipsw file.
Gives me the error "eligible for requested build"
what do I try now???
1. exit Recovery mode (see previous comments up 2 from yours)
2. under Method 2 repeat 3 & 4 until your see your device in iTunes
3. double check!!! the and ensure you have correct file
4. Do NOT click restore!
5. Click "Check for update"
6. Then select the file
Device disappeared during timed transition. So close! Help :)
Be patient take a deep breath and walk through the process again.
1. Ensure you have the last iTunes installed (restart if you update itunes)
2. Restart the process again and go step by step
Sometimes we don't get it right the first time
Read my previous comment Also ensure you pick the right download. Critical.
What could i possibly doing wrong?
Select the file, click open. Itunes will handle it from there. Pay attention to your phone and itunes.
1) With the iPhone connected to iTunes.
- Press Power and Home button at the same time for 10 seconds
- then home button alone for 5 more seconds. iTunes logo should appear on your iPhone screen
2) Unplug then plug to iTunes again. (
- A message will pop up on your mac/pc saying update or restore now.
- Select cancel.
- then instead of selecting update option alone press down cmd and alt buttons(mac) or shift on windows on keyboard while pressing the update button with your mouse.
- A window should open up. select the downgrade update file you already downloaded that is already compatible with your device.
- click open
3) done!
The downgrade worked perfectly, and AFAICT there is no loss of data.
Thanks again!
Is your Itunes up to date? Whats the Model Number?
@Anonyous

@jill
The upgrade/downgrade actually started?
I still have an intermittent freezing issue, I have to set up my mail accounts and some other options again, but I have a functioning iPad! I am so very happy, and you are awesome!
iOS 9 has thoroughly disturbed my partner's iPhone5's normal operations, even including making simple calls.
Plus, there is then all the bizarre, arcane iCloud stuff to sort through one more time, with new controls and old ones missing.
Apple has gotten too big and complex to succeed, it seems. What a shame (and this from an Apple fan since his first Apple II)!
A few users reported that issue as indicated. One user mentioned that they reappeared. I did not have that problem. Glad everything is okay otherwise.Ensure you backup regularly going forward.
Strange. Are you on windows/Mac? Are you browsing to the correct location of the file?
- Hold the shift key and while holding, click on 'check for update' button
- you should be able to select the file and thereafter click the open button just as in the video clip. Watch if you have not.
Back up and running with a working iPad mini after 5 days of a brick.
Thanks for the solution!
Again, Apple's apparent "backup" hadn't worked completely. The Apps were there, but I'm having to upgrade them all to their latest versions... and all were up to date before I backed up and then upgraded to iOS 9.
Disappointed with Apple, happy with and grateful to you guys. Thanks!
I am unable to back up a copy in itunes and my iphone is stuck at slide to upgrade. If i use method 2 will my data still be there or completely wipe off?
Thanks
I am so happy that i found your blog. I am stuck at slide to upgrade and i am unable to back up a copy using itunes. Will I be able to get all my data back if i use method 2? Thanks
the downgrade to 8.4.1 is THE solution when you don't have a fresh backup.
I tried without success to backup my Ipad2 after it froze, and finally found this and…
END of the PROBLEM. 50 Go of data reappeared in working order … just some strange change of color in the way Itunes identifies the data which identifies itself now mostly as "other"
Downgrading my Ipad2 to IOS 8.4.1 saved my data (50Go), any other suggestion did not suit me as I could not succeed to back it up once frozen ,and did not have a recent backup;
evrything works fine, except the data identifies itself mostly as "other" in Itunes
Please look at Apple updated fix
The information is here: http://roleli.blogspot.com/2015/09/apple-releases-ios-901-to-fix-slide-to.html
1. Copy off your pictures and videos from device using this procedure. That way you get space
http://roleli.blogspot.com/2015/09/access-imagesvideos-on-your-slide-to.html
2. Then return and try this procedure again
Follow me at @roleli on Twiiter and DM me and send me a screen shot of the error
2. To get your pictures and video use this option
http://roleli.blogspot.com/2015/09/access-imagesvideos-on-your-slide-to.html
I have tried the other option to get pictures off but my phone will not show up in the computers folder. Again I think this is because I cant say trust this computer on my phone.
Chose the update option.
