Solution to iOS9 "Slide to Upgrade" issue on iPad/iPhone

Please Note Apple's Official Fix now Available
Apple has pushed out an iOS update to address issues users have experienced with the Setup Assistant app getting stuck on “Slide to Upgrade.”  Please read Apple releases iOS 9.0.1 to fix Slide to Upgrade and other bugs
The following is left as an example of what persons had to do before to get the iPad/iPhone/iPod working. It is preferable to use the official Apple Fix above going forward. If it fails, try Method 2 below; it works.

Method 1 (Apple's solution)

If you don't have a backup I suggest you go to Method 2 but you will need steps 1 & 2 from below.
  1. Connect your iOS device to a computer (that you've previously synced) with iTunes. Then make sure iTunes is open. (n.b. Ensure you have the latest version of iTunes
  2. Select your device. If you don't see it listed, force restart your device by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
    • You will need to enter you passcode 1/2 times
    • and "trust the computer" (if you have not already used the device with that machine)
  3. If you made an iTunes backup of your device before updating to iOS 9, restore your device from that backup.
  4. If not, Apple suggest you need to make a backup of your device in iTunes, then restore from that backup.  (This might not work. For many it says, 'backing up your device', but does nothing, so move to Method 2)
Source: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205239

Method 2 (Downgrade to 8.4.1 Upgrade to 9.0.2)

  1. Download iOS 8.4.1 iOS  9.0.2 from https://ipsw.me/
    • Select your device  (look up model number  - model wiki )
(Double check & ensure you pick the correct one - iPhone | iPad )
    • Then iOS 8.4.1 iOS  9.0.2
    • Download it (It is a large file, so be patient. It takes time. Note the location )
      (n.b. C
ertain browsers may change the ipsw-file into a zip-file. If this occurs, re-name the to end in .ipsw and iTunes will recognize it)
  2. While that downloads, do steps 1 & 2 from Method 1 above. (repeated below for you as 3 & 4)
  3. Open iTunes (preferably on a computer previously synced  with your device)
    • Make sure iTunes is open first before connecting. n.b. - Ensure you have the latest version of iTunes! i.e. iTunes 12.3 at writing. To do this by clicking on the menu item 'help' in iTunes and then 'check for updates'. If you have to upgrade iTunes, please restart the PC/Mac after the updating.
    • Then Connect your iOS device to the computer
    • Do some diagnostics. Click on 'Help' then
  5. When the download is complete,
    • Hold the Option / Alt Key on your Mac keyboard, OR Shift Key in Windows and
    • While holding the key, click on the "Check for Update or Update" button in iTunes,
    • A file explorer window should now open. (n.b. Some guides suggest the restore iPhone/iPad option but that asks for you to disable "find my iPhone" plus if you don't have a backup it is useless and you lose your data. Don't use it). See video below from Lewis Tech for e.g. Use the latest signed  As indicated Do Not  Click The Restore Option you will lose your data
  6. Browse to the file you downloaded , in step 1 above, select the file and click open
  7. Watch the messages from extracting, to verify, to preparing until your phone comes back to life. (Please be patient as this can take up to 30 minutes)
That is it and there seems to be no loss of data which is good news.

Once done, backup your device before if you do anything else, then upgrade to iOS 9.0, if you have the heart for it!

The bug seems to affect devices upgrading from iOS7 to iOS9.

This is the only thing that works.
I tried the apple solution and it did not work. (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205239)
I just got stuck in an endless loop and lost the entire evening:
7 pm: backed up phone
7:30 pm: foolishly pushed the 'upgrade' button
8:00 pm: phone is a brick
1:00 am: downgrade to ios8 done and restore worked - whew

@pwinco, DO not extract the files! just Select the compressed file. Itunes will handle the extraction

@laurie Check to ensure that you picked the right device. if you pick the wrong device it will say incompatible. If you had jail-breaked the phone you are might have problems too

I can not get my ipad to show up in iTunes. It asked me if I want to sync it...when I select "continue" it says to authorize it from my ipad. Well I can't because it won't go past the "swipe to upgrade" screen.

I don't understand what you are option/alt clicking on for "check for update" is it for the device?

I can't get itunes to recognize my device at all. It's treating it like it's brand new.

@Anonymous Anonymous 12:31 PM ( Use the same steps to exit recover mode)
To get out of recovery mode,
- make sure your USB cable is connected to both the laptop running iTunes and your device.
- You may need to hold the home button while connecting your USB cable.
- Now hold the home and sleep/wake buttons together until you see the Apple logo appear

Follow this suggestion from @Motazz Alarfaj
1) With the iPhone connected to iTunes.
- Press Power and Home button at the same time for 10 seconds
- then home button alone for 5 more seconds. iTunes logo should appear on your iPhone screen
2) Unplug then plug to iTunes again. (
- A message will pop up on your mac/pc saying update or restore now.
- Select cancel.
- then instead of selecting update option alone press down cmd and alt buttons(mac) or shift on windows on keyboard while pressing the update button with your mouse.
- A window should open up. select the downgrade update file you already downloaded that is already compatible with your device.
- click open
3) done!
Jill said…
That doesn't work for me:( I tried that too. I wish I was one of the lucky ones. One of the things I noticed is that the serial number disappears half way through the update. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not.

Thank you very much, it worked very well after few trial and error sessions. Let me advice people still have some issues while using windows system, please download the global version of 8.4.1, then rename the file extension from .zip to .ipsw. So that it can be picked up while selecting the file from windows. And then I just restored it rather than update (as suggested by bloggers).
Jill said…
Yes, it actually started and it looked like it was working but in the end it just gave me the plug in screen again. So I just decided to restore and update and that worked. It would not have worked without this though, so I am very thankful for you and your advice. Even though I lost all my data on my phone in the end I was at least able to get the phone to come back to life which I hadn't been able to do on my own. I'm still not sure why it didn't work for me the same way it worked for others but I was too impatient to troubleshoot anymore. Thank you so much for this page, it helped me. Thanks for your response to questions and all of your expertise!
roleli said…
@jill That's life. The think is at that stage, when it asked for the restore, you should have just clicked cancel, and then do step 5 and upgrade/downgrade and you would saved the date. Anyway, key thing going forward is backup your phone and other devices regularly. All the best. Glad I could help
GaGirrl said…
You are amazing! It took a few tries and my iPad timed out (it's because I have a 3rd party USB/charging cable instead of an expen$$$ive Apple one) and I had to find another PC with Windows 8 that I could update iTunes on, but I have my iPad back.

I still have an intermittent freezing issue, I have to set up my mail accounts and some other options again, but I have a functioning iPad! I am so very happy, and you are awesome!
Desert Sun said…
We will downgrade AND STAY DOWNGRADED!

iOS 9 has thoroughly disturbed my partner's iPhone5's normal operations, even including making simple calls.

Plus, there is then all the bizarre, arcane iCloud stuff to sort through one more time, with new controls and old ones missing.

Apple has gotten too big and complex to succeed, it seems. What a shame (and this from an Apple fan since his first Apple II)!

I'm on Windows. I confirmed the proper download for the proper ipad but when I download it just saves as a zip file, so I renamed the file( I have tried both extracting and not). I saved it right to my desktop so I definitely could find it.

@boo open the iTunes windows. I am assuming that iTunes has detected the device.
- Hold the shift key and while holding, click on 'check for update' button
- you should be able to select the file and thereafter click the open button just as in the video clip. Watch if you have not.

This works great - as others have said - unlike Apple's solution.
Back up and running with a working iPad mini after 5 days of a brick.
Thanks for the solution!

Again, Apple's apparent "backup" hadn't worked completely. The Apps were there, but I'm having to upgrade them all to their latest versions... and all were up to date before I backed up and then upgraded to iOS 9.

Disappointed with Apple, happy with and grateful to you guys. Thanks!

@DelirousOne: 2 options 1. Do a force restart 2. if that does not work you might have to put the device in recovery mode - see https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201263 under "Put your device in recovery mode and set it up again"
Chose the update option.

Fortunately they (the in laws!) are not very computer literate so couldn't follow what they were being asked to do.
