Fantasy Land

This article in the Jamaica Gleaner captures how I feel about this fantasy island. It is an island where the economy is booming, un-employment is going down, crime is down , there is unity in the community and more prosperity to come. It is all a fantasy.

When I was 5 years old and in Grade 1 at primary school I learned my country's pledge. "I pledge the love and loyalty of my heart, the strength and vigor of my body...". Back then they were just words but when I got to around grade 3 I started to understand what the words meant and I determined that I would honour my pledge because when I pledge to do something and commit myself to it, I mean to do it. But here I am, stuck so many miles from home and not being able to at least contribute to helping to fix my country which reminds me a lot of "Fantasy Land".

And the fact of the matter is although there are so many problems in "Fantasy Land" and therefore in my country there is nowhere in the world that I would rather be.

There was a reggae song sometime ago and the words to the chorus said "But when yuh check it out Lawd, nuh weh nuh betta dan yaad."

Do they still teach the pledge in primary schools? I used to have to recite it every morning at devotion. That was a good thing. Maybe it is something we need to go back to. Perhaps we need to teach our children to be loyal so that they grow up to be loyal adults who respect their country and only want what is best for it which will ultimately be what is best for them. But I guess that too would be a FANTASY.
