Happy New Year from Jamaica.
Before I wish you happy New Year, let me express my condolences to the family of the Lyn's, policemen Eubanks and Genus and others and their relatives who have lost love ones to the senseless violence occurring in the country. I would like to express my sympathy to the blind man, Mr. Elliot, who fell in to a hole while walking on one of Kingston's pothole riddled sidewalks and has struggled to get medical attention from the Comprehensive Clinic or Kingston Public Hospital after four (4) days. You can just imagine the problem he has if motorists blessed with vision can't avoid potholes on the deplorable roads in the country.
Why does this country have supposedly two top entertainers, 'BM' and 'BK', mashing up stage shows while arguing about what each did or could not with an 'angel' and that rubbish continues to make the headlines and clogging the airwaves.
We also are waiting to see if the Trafigura money described as "peanuts" and "chicken feed" will some how find its way back. This debacle is small compared to the several other scandals to have affected the country but has clearly depicted the tangled web of deception being weaved in the country.
I hope that after three days into 2007 and 13 persons already dead, it will become clear to the government and the security forces that crime is far from being "under control". It is time they stop deceiving themselves and recognize that we have a very serious problem. The Minister of National Security must stop deluding himself into believing that a serious dent was made into crime, when only a minor dent was made. Murders might have been down in 2006 but figures for shootings, car thefts, and other serious crimes along with the missing persons have eluded the lazy press or are simply being hid by those intent on painting the fitly pig pen white.
All this talk about improvement in the economy, the "official figures" say so, will evapourate into thin air unless something is done about this security issue.
To Mr. Golding, I would like to advise that a statement attributed to you about joining the church and state is a recipe for disaster. Let history remind us that where church and state has joined together more senseless killing/persecution has often been the result. The founding fathers of the USA knew this and tried hard to separate the two as a means of trying to ensure that the terrible silliness of the 'Dark Ages' might never happen again.
Despite the miserable outlook, I continue to look for a better place, out of this world and I believe that with God all things are possible. With that, I now wish you a Happy New Year.
