Apple goes down market with the iPhone SE

Apple has gone down market with the new cheaper iPhone SE launched today, although they won't admit it. The iPhone SE comes with a 4-inch screen, similar to what was found in the earlier devices like the iPhone5/5S.

It comes with an A9 Chip, the same processor as the iPhone 6S. This means the smaller phone will just as powerful as the larger model. The battery life is expected to be better that the iPhone 6S given the smaller display size.

The design is very similar to the iPhone 5/5s with flat sides, not the round edges found in the iPhone 6.The key feature missing will  be 3D touch and for most that will be no big deal.

The new device will cost only US$399 for the 16GB model, the cheapest Apple has ever offered an iPhone to the market. The 64GB model will cost $499. The available colors are silver, space gray, gold, and rose gold.

Users can begin ordering on March 24, 2016. The price is down market but the iPhone SE is representative of a quality Apple product.

Smaller iPad Pro

Also  going small is the iPad Pro.  The new smaller iPad Pro will weigh less than one pound, that's less than 2.2 Kg.  It will have a 9.7-inch screen and will be come with the Apple Pencil.

The iPad Pro will be powered by an A9X processor and M9 co-processor and like the iPhone 6S will be 4K video capable. The Wi-Fi only model will cost US$599 for the 32GB model, US$799 for 128GB and $899 for 256GB. The Apple Pencil will cost US$99.

Other announcements  today include
  • Apple Watch Update. The price also drops to US$299.
  • CareKit - This will be available in April and is a personal healthcare initiative.
  • Apple TV update 
  • Apple Watch Bands - New colors.
  • iOS 9.3 release. The latest OS will be available today. The key new feature is Night Shit. This feature will shift(dim) the display to help you get to sleep using geo-location to figure out when the sun sets. Apple wants to tell you when it's time to sleep.
